Working together for student success

Community Partners and Minneapolis Public Schools


For many years, community groups in Minneapolis have partnered with schools to provide services to students. However, the school district has lacked a formal process to engage with community organizations on a consistent basis from school to school. In an effort to foster effective partnerships, MPS has created an online process to certify organizations and individuals who offer programs to students. These certified organizations are called Community Partners. The process is a key element in the district’s overall risk management program.

Advantages to Students

  • Matches resources to school and student needs so services are targeted and the potential for student success is increased.

Advantages to Schools

  • Provides assurances that the Community Partner will adhere to district policies.
  • Provides assurances that background checks have been completed for Community Partners who provide services to students without the direct supervision of MPS staff.

Advantages to Community Organizations

  • The online process, used consistently at all schools, makes it easier for community organizations to make connections with schools.
  • The online process provides a means for Community Partners to continue relationships with schools in the event of MPS staff transition.
