Matt Abbott was born and raised in St. Paul, MN, across the river from Roosevelt. After graduating from Highland Park Senior High, he attended the University of Minnesota, Morris, where he earned a B.A. in Biochemistry and was published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry A.
Post-college, Mr. Abbott moved to Minneapolis. He worked for the AVID program in Saint Paul Public Schools before earning his teaching license through the TC2 program at Hamline University. He has been working at Roosevelt since 2014.
The transition to high school can be difficult. Mr. Abbott was not organized, not motivated, and not engaged in middle school; he failed both 8th grade social studies and 8th grade science, and spent a lot of time in the principal's office. Through his own experience, Mr. Abbott knows that students arrive at high school with different pasts and different things going on in their lives. It is his goal to meet the needs of every student in his class so they can be successful. Mr. Abbott believes that every student can succeed, and holds high expectations for everyone in his classroom.
Aside from teaching, Mr. Abbott has been Employee of the Month at both Pizza Hut (November 2006) and Arbys (May 2003). In his spare time, he plays in a band and enjoys riding his bike. He is not a strong speller and learned where Nebraska was in 2008.
