What is GEAR UP/GET READY?

Gear Up/Get Ready is a college access program that serves students in grades 10, 11 and 12 at Roosevelt High School. It is a federally funded program that provides one-on-one advising, classroom lessons, college field trips, family events and more. Get Ready Mission:   Our mission is to get underrepresented students to and through college. We achieve this by providing college & career programming, engaging in community outreach and creating systemic change in education

 

Don't forget to turn in your Get Ready Registration form. It was sent home in the Roosevelt Student Packet. For a new form, please contatct one of the Get Ready staff or pick one up in the counseling office, room 103.

 

Meet the Get Ready Staff

 

Karlee Nussbaum is a recent transfer from Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in International Studies and Spanish in 2012. She continued her education at Dominican University receiving a Master's Degree in K-12 Spanish Education. Karlee Nussbaum recently completed a year at Farnsworth Aerospace in St. Paul and two years teaching high school Spanish in Chicago. Karlee Nussbaum is excited to work with tenth grade students to create achievement-oriented mindsets and to set them on the path to success!

Sandra Kroger is originally from Ontario, Canada. She received an Honors Bachelor of Arts in French and English from York University. She spent one year studying at the University of Bordeaux III in France. When she returned she received a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto. After moving to Minnesota, she continued her education at Hamline University receiving a Master’s Degree in K-12 Education and then continuing to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for her Master of Science in Education degree. Sandra Kroger was a teacher in Minneapolis for 17 years and is now in her seventh year as a counselor. Sandra Kroger looks forward to helping tenth graders develop and achieve an individualized vision of success.

Esther Garubanda has worked in Saint Paul for two years and is now back in Minneapolis. She attended University of Minnesota Morris and then graduated from the University Of Minnesota Twin Cities, with a Bachelor of arts in Sociology. She will be working with the 12th graders as an Education Liaison. She will be working with help students get their applications filled out, apply for scholarships, understand their financial aid and teach lessons that help with the tricky and sometimes complicated process to being enrolled at a post-secondary school. When she is not working Esther enjoys playing basketball, watches crime-related shows, learns how to wood work using tools and loves being outside. She is always creating something, either sewing it, making it, or cooking it. She is usually never bored.

The Get Ready curriculum focuses on supporting students to and through college by providing resources as well as information in the following categories: college/career knowledge, college-going identity (match & fit), motivation and self-regulation, and college milestones.

* COLLEGE CAMPUS VISITS 

NEW!  Get Ready will be providing smaller college campus visits by state van on non school days. Permission slips will be available in the counseling office, room 103-1.
