Steph Kappel, AVID Elective Teacher & Coordinator Room 303

I’ve been working in the field of education since graduating from North Dakota State University with a degree in biology in 1997. I have had the opportunity to teach in both formal and informal classrooms with a focus on science education for most of my career.   I have taught children as young as four, adults in masters programs and every age in between. I am happy to be back in a high school setting, excited to be back in MPS and thrilled to be part of the AVID team at Roosevelt! When I’m not at school, I enjoy being outside, watching youth sports and trying to master the art of baking.  Each year I get closer and closer to perfecting my cheesecake recipe.  ;)

I came to Roosevelt as an AVID tutor in 2021 and fell in love with the program. What do I love about AVID? The students, of course!  AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a national program designed to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society. The AVID curriculum is designed around core strategies to help students develop their writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading (WICOR) skills. Students in the AVID program will see themselves grow both academically and socially and will be empowered to take ownership of their education.

To learn more about the program visit the AVID website or send me an email. I’d love to tell you more about what makes this program a great fit for so many students!
